Navratna Guide
The Nine Planetary Gemstones
In Vedic tradition each graha answers to one ratna. Worn correctly, a gemstone strengthens its planet; worn carelessly, it amplifies exactly what you don't need. Here is the honest guide — benefits, rituals, and who should stay away.
| Gemstone | Hindi | Planet | Colour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ruby | Manik | Sun | Pigeon-blood red |
| Pearl | Moti | Moon | Silvery white |
| Red Coral | Moonga | Mars | Vermilion red |
| Emerald | Panna | Mercury | Deep garden green |
| Yellow Sapphire | Pukhraj | Jupiter | Kanakambaram yellow |
| Diamond / White Sapphire | Heera | Venus | Colourless brilliance |
| Blue Sapphire | Neelam | Saturn | Cornflower blue |
| Hessonite | Gomed | Rahu | Cinnamon-honey brown |
| Cat's Eye | Lehsunia / Vaidurya | Ketu | Chrysoberyl grey-green with band |
Which gemstone is right for me?
Never choose by sun sign alone or on a jeweller's advice alone. The safe order of operations:
- Get your kundli analysed — identify which planet is weak, afflicted or the rightful yogakaraka for your ascendant.
- Check friendliness — a lagna-friendly planet's stone is safe; an enemy-planet stone for your ascendant is not, however attractive.
- Trial period — tradition suggests wearing on the planet's day, after energisation, and observing 7–15 days before committing.
- Natural & untreated — lab-grown glass or heavily treated stones carry little planetary weight in Jyotish practice.
