What Is Kalighat Kali Mandir?
Kalighat Kali Mandir is a Hindu temple in Kolkata, West Bengal, dedicated to Goddess Kali, worshipped as the fierce Mother Divine. It’s one of the most visited spiritual sites in eastern India
A Simple History
-
Legendary Beginning (circa 300 CE):
Adi Shankaracharya is said to have discovered a self-manifested (swayambhu) Kali image here and built the first shrine. -
Modern Temple (1809):
The present red-and-white ath-chala style structure was completed by the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family in 1809
Why It’s Sacred
Kalighat is one of 51 Shakti Peethas, where a part of Goddess Sati’s body fell during Shiva’s cosmic dance. Here, the toes of her right foot are believed to have landed, making it deeply revered
