Durga Suktam
The Durga Suktam (दुर्गा सूक्तम्) is a celebrated Vedic hymn that praises the Goddess Durga in the form of blazing Fire — Agni — the luminous consciousness that burns away inner and outer adversities. In the Vedic vision, the Goddess is not a distant idol but the very fire of knowledge that carries the soul like a boat across the perilous ocean of worldly existence (Samsara). Jātavedase Sunavāma Somam-Arātīyato Nidahāti Vedaḥ,
Sa Naḥ Parṣad-Ati Durgāṇi Viśvā Nāveva Sindhuṁ Duritāti-Agniḥ ||1||
Meaning: To Jataveda — the One from whom the Vedas are born — we press out the Soma and invoke Her ardently. She consumes by Her fire of knowledge all adversities within and without. May that Agni, the Fire of Durga, carry us over this ocean of the world, full of great difficulties and beset with perils, like a boat carrying one over a rough sea.

तामग्निवर्णां तपसा ज्वलन्तीं वैरोचनीं कर्मफलेषु जुष्टाम् ।
दुर्गां देवीं शरणमहं प्रपद्ये सुतरसि तरसे नमः ॥ २ ॥
Tām-Agni-Varṇāṁ Tapasā Jvalantīṁ Vairocanīṁ Karmaphaleṣu Juṣṭām,
Durgāṁ Devīṁ Śaraṇam-Ahaṁ Prapadye Su-Tarasi Tarase Namaḥ ||2||
Meaning: To Her who is of the colour of fire and blazing with tapas; who was born of that fire of austerities and is worshipped through the fruits of actions offered to Her flame — to that Durga, that Devi, I take refuge by falling at Her feet. O Mother Durga, I prostrate before You; please ferry me mercifully over this ocean of the world.

अग्ने त्वं पारया नव्यो अस्मान् स्वस्तिभिरति दुर्गाणि विश्वा ।
पूश्च पृथ्वी बहुला न उर्वी भवा तोकाय तनयाय शंयोः ॥ ३ ॥
Agne Tvaṁ Pārayā Navyo Asmān Svastibhir-Ati Durgāṇi Viśvā,
Pūśca Pṛthvī Bahulā Na Urvī Bhavā Tokāya Tanayāya Śaṁyoḥ ||3||
Meaning: O Agni, Fire of Durga, You who are ever praised for carrying souls across this Samsara, please ferry us too, carrying our souls over your auspicious nature, and make us cross this world full of difficulties. Spread your auspiciousness over the land and earth so that it becomes abundantly fertile and green, and fill us, your children, with your bliss — within and without.

विश्वानि नो दुर्गहा जातवेदः सिन्धुं न नावा दुरितातिपर्षि ।
अग्ने अत्रिवन्मनसा गृणानोऽस्माकं बोध्यविता तनूनाम् ॥ ४ ॥
Viśvāni No Durgahā Jātavedaḥ Sindhuṁ Na Nāvā Duritāti-Parṣi,
Agne Atrivan-Manasā Gṛṇāno-’smākaṁ Bodhy-Avitā Tanūnām ||4||
Meaning: O Jataveda, You remove the grave difficulties of all the worlds. Please carry us like a boat across this very difficult ocean of the world. O Agni, Fire of Durga, our minds invoke You ardently as Sage Atri chanted continuously, and our beings are now filled with Your consciousness.

पृतनाजितं सहमानमुग्रमग्निं हुवेम परमात्सधस्थात् ।
स नः पर्षदति दुर्गाणि विश्वा क्षामद्देवो अति दुरितात्यग्निः ॥ ५ ॥
Pṛtanājitaṁ Sahamānam-Ugram-Agniṁ Huvema Paramāt-Sadhasthāt,
Sa Naḥ Parṣad-Ati Durgāṇi Viśvā Kṣāmad-Devo Ati Duritāti-Agniḥ ||5||
Meaning: She is the great Fire who is invincible in battle and charges forward in a terrible manner, conquering the enemies. We invoke Her together from the highest assembly, with the greatest reverence. May that Agni, the Fire of Durga, carry us over this world full of great difficulties, burning to ashes the difficult enemies within us with Her divine flame.

प्रत्नोषि कमीड्यो अध्वरेषु सनाच्च होता नव्यश्च सत्सि ।
स्वां चाग्ने तनुवं पिप्रयस्वास्मभ्यं च सौभगमायजस्व ॥ ६ ॥
Pratnoṣi Kam-īḍyo Adhvareṣu Sanācca Hotā Navyśca Satsi,
Svāṁ Cāgne Tanuvaṁ Piprayasvāsmabhyaṁ Ca Saubhagam-Ayajasva ||6||
Meaning: You are lauded for spreading bliss in the sacrifice since ancient times — the bliss that follows the slaying of inner enemies. You act as the Hota, the invoker of bliss, abiding as an eternally young and undecaying maiden in the sacrificial altar within the hearts of devotees. Your own conscious form, O Agni, Fire of Durga, is a source of happiness and welfare for us and for our worship.

गोभिर्जुष्टमयुजो निषिक्तं तवेन्द्र विष्णोरनुसंचरेम ।
नाकस्य पृष्ठमभि संवसानो वैष्णवीं लोक इह मादयन्ताम् ॥ ७ ॥
Gobhir-Juṣṭam-Ayujo Niṣiktaṁ Tave-ndra Viṣṇor-Anusaṁcarema,
Nākasya Pṛṣṭham-Abhi Saṁvasāno Vaiṣṇavīṁ Loka Iha Mādayantām ||7||
Meaning: With our senses pleased by your blissful presence and becoming unattached to the external world, we are infused with your devotion, O Highest One. May we follow your all-pervading blissful consciousness within the spiritual sky, and dwell here in this Vaishnavi Loka, the world of your all-pervading consciousness, intoxicated by your blissful nature.
Durga Gāyatrī
ॐ कात्यायनाय विद्महे कन्याकुमारि धीमहि ।
तन्नो दुर्गिः प्रचोदयात् ॥
Om Kātyāyanāya Vidmahe Kanyākumāri Dhīmahi,
Tanno Durgiḥ Pracodayāt
Meaning: Om. Let us contemplate on Devi Katyayani so as to know Her conscious form; let us meditate deeply on that Kanyakumari, the Universal Mother. May that Fire of Durga awaken our consciousness.
Shanti Mantra
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥
Om Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ
Meaning: Om. May there be peace, peace, peace — at the three levels: Adidaivika (pertaining to the cosmic deities), Adibhautika (pertaining to the physical world) and Adhyatmika (pertaining to the inner self).
